The Impact of Insurance Prices on Decision-Making Biases: An Experimental Analysis
This paper tests whether the use of endogenous risk categorization by insurers enables consumers to make better-informed decisions even if they do not choose to purchase insurance. We do so by adding a simple insurance market to an experimental test of optimal (Bayesian) updating. In some sessions, no insurance is offered. In others, actuarially fair insurance prices are posted, and a subset of subjects is allowed to purchase this insurance. We find significant differences in the decision rules used depending on whether or not one observes insurance prices. Although the majority of choices correspond to Bayesian updating, the incidence of optimal decisions is higher in sessions with an insurance option. Most subjects given the option to purchase actuarially fair insurance choose to do so, however fewer subjects purchase insurance when the probability of a loss is higher. Working Paper 06-1

Parallel spinors and holonomy groups
In this paper we complete the classification of spin manifolds admitting
parallel spinors, in terms of the Riemannian holonomy groups. More precisely,
we show that on a given n-dimensional Riemannian manifold, spin structures with
parallel spinors are in one to one correspondence with lifts to Spin_n of the
Riemannian holonomy group, with fixed points on the spin representation space.
In particular, we obtain the first examples of compact manifolds with two

Investigating and learning from toddler play in a childrenâs museum
The play needs of under threeâs is an under-researched area. In this study 100 parents and carers were surveyed regarding their visit to a childrenâs museum with a child under three. Using a play taxonomy and observation schedule devised for the study, 50 toddlers were also observed playing with the museum exhibits. The findings showed that whilst there were many reasons for the visit, including play, it was not with the purpose of learning. However on reflection, it was one of the perceived benefits. There were significant differences in types of play engaged in; younger toddlers engaged in more ego play and older toddlers engaged in more pretend and role-play. Also, children enjoyed playing and learning with all exhibits despite being arranged for particular age groups. These findings and the tools used in the study will be of interest and use to both early years educators and museum educators
Quantum effects can render w<-1 on cosmological scales
We report on a revision of our previous computation of the renormalized
expectation value of the stress-energy tensor of a massless, minimally coupled
scalar with a quartic self-interaction on a locally de Sitter background. This
model is important because it demonstrates that quantum effects can lead to
violations of the weak energy condition on cosmological scales - on average,
not just in fluctuations - although the effect in this particular model is far
too small to be observed. The revision consists of modifying the propagator so
that dimensional regularization can be used when the dimension of the
renormalized theory is not four. Although the finite part of the stress-energy
tensor does not change (in D=4) from our previous result, the counterterms do.
We also speculate that a certain, finite and separately conserved part of the
stress tensor can be subsumed into a natural correction of the initial state
from free Bunch-Davies vacuum.Comment: 9 pages, references adde
Spin-enhanced magnetocaloric effect in molecular nanomagnets
An unusually large magnetocaloric effect for the temperature region below 10 K is found for the Fe-14 molecular nanomagnet. This is to large extent caused by its extremely large spin S ground state combined with an excess of entropy arising from the presence of low-lying excited S states. We also show that the highly symmetric Fe-14 cluster core, resulting in small cluster magnetic anisotropy, enables the occurrence of long-range antiferromagnetic order below T-N=1.87 K
Invariant manifolds and orbit control in the solar sail three-body problem
In this paper we consider issues regarding the control and orbit transfer of solar sails in the circular restricted Earth-Sun system. Fixed points for solar sails in this system have the linear dynamical properties of saddles crossed with centers; thus the fixed points are dynamically unstable and control is required. A natural mechanism of control presents itself: variations in the sail's orientation. We describe an optimal controller to control the sail onto fixed points and periodic orbits about fixed points. We find this controller to be very robust, and define sets of initial data using spherical coordinates to get a sense of the domain of controllability; we also perform a series of tests for control onto periodic orbits. We then present some mission strategies involving transfer form the Earth to fixed points and onto periodic orbits, and controlled heteroclinic transfers between fixed points on opposite sides of the Earth. Finally we present some novel methods to finding periodic orbits in circumstances where traditional methods break down, based on considerations of the Center Manifold theorem
Graph-Embedding Empowered Entity Retrieval
In this research, we improve upon the current state of the art in entity
retrieval by re-ranking the result list using graph embeddings. The paper shows
that graph embeddings are useful for entity-oriented search tasks. We
demonstrate empirically that encoding information from the knowledge graph into
(graph) embeddings contributes to a higher increase in effectiveness of entity
retrieval results than using plain word embeddings. We analyze the impact of
the accuracy of the entity linker on the overall retrieval effectiveness. Our
analysis further deploys the cluster hypothesis to explain the observed
advantages of graph embeddings over the more widely used word embeddings, for
user tasks involving ranking entities
